Jesse Hickman is an American abstract artist known for minimalist works that explore the expressive potential of humble, reclaimed materials. Originally trained in photography at the Institute of Design in Chicago, Hickman later turned to painting and sculpture, developing an intuitive practice that incorporates burlap sacks, pallet wood, salvaged paper, house paint, and other found materials. His compositions balance geometric structure with playful mark-making, emphasizing simplicity, material history, and the quiet beauty of the handmade. Hickman is a two-time recipient of a Pollock–Krasner Foundation grant, and his work has been exhibited at institutions including the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, the Rose Art Museum, the Bemis Foundation, and The Painting Center in New York. Now based in Northern Michigan, he continues to create understated, inventive abstractions informed by his surroundings and a deeply intuitive approach to making.
