Du Chau
It’s so strange; my art degree actually helped my medical work… art has helped me to ask more questions as a scientist.
—Du Chau on the interplay of art and science in his practice
Du Chau is an American ceramic and mixed-media artist best known for his contemplative porcelain and wire sculptures that blend repetition, memory, and material transformation. After immigrating to the United States in 1981, he pursued a career in medical pathology while simultaneously developing his art practice. In the 1990s, he began ceramics studies at Brookhaven College, later earning both a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Fine Arts from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University.
Rooted in porcelain and industrial techniques such as slip casting and mold making, Du’s work often combines fine ceramic forms with delicately suspended wire elements to create quiet, charged spaces that evoke childhood memories, repetitive daily activities, and the layered rhythms of lived experience. His fascination with duplication and subtle variation, which he describes as constant permutation, reflects both an analytical mind and a poetic sensibility, where repetition becomes a mode of introspection and transformation.
Du has exhibited widely across the United States and internationally. His work has been recognized with awards and residencies including the NCECA International Residency and a residency at the C.R.E.T.A. Foundation in Rome. He is also a co-founder and exhibition coordinator of the Goldmark Cultural Center in Dallas.
In addition to his artistic practice, Du continues to teach ceramics and engage with community arts initiatives, bringing together scientific curiosity and creative inquiry in work that is both meditative and richly textured.
