Deeply informed by the Atlantic coast of New Jersey, where water meets land in both serene and dangerously serious ways, Emily Gilman Beezley’s stylized landscapes seek to hold this tension together. This is not to say she only paints beach scenes, however. Desert canyons, large mountains, dense forests - these too find their way into Gilman Beezley’s paintings. These environments - mostly rendered in oil - are abstracted to a point where their habitability and familiarity are held at a distance. Large blocks of color layered as the face of a hill or dense hatching fusing into a dark tree line - such formal choices obscure their natural referent enough that what was (and still is) a beautiful landscape becomes something slightly foreboding; the result is a compelling painting. Gilman Beezley has exhibited extensively in the tri-state area.
