Working across sculpture, ceramics, and mixed media, Kelly Witmer seeks out organic allusions in mineral materials subjected to intense heat. Her sculptural practice centers on melting sheets of glass directly into custom ceramic armatures or steel frameworks inside a kiln. By manipulating gravity and temperature, Witmer coaxes the glass to slump, puddle, or pool within these rigid structures. Often, the results take on alternately ambiguous and explicit biological associations. In her work it's possible to see the symmetrical curves of a reproductive system, the ovoid cavities of what could be eyes, or a gentle roundness that feels bodily even if it resembles nobody around. The anatomical hints of Witmer’s practice are pushed further by her occasional inclusion of fur, synthetic hair, and other, softer materials in the gaps of the sculpture’s hardened surfaces. She has exhibited extensively across the United States.
