Olga Titus: Bejeweled

Kelly-McKenna Gallery, 1308 3rd Avenue, Spring Lake, NJ 07762
Dates: December 01, 2024-January 21, 2024

Kelly-McKenna Gallery is pleased to present “Olga Titus: Bejeweled,” our first exhibition showcasing the artwork of Swiss and Malaysian artist Olga Titus. Gorgeously rendered in sumptuous embroidered sequins, the artist’s vivid, shimmering solo exhibition beckons visitors into a mysterious and magical garden. Forever in transition between two distinct images, Titus’ bejeweled artworks represent the potentiality for an infinite array of possible images, exploring the question of how painting finds its place in today's world of scrolling, swiping, and scanning through endless screens filled with readily available pictures. The exhibition “Olga Titus: Bejeweled” opens to the public on Friday, December 01, 2023 and will continue into the new year through Sunday, January 21, 2024.

Titus' enchanting artworks challenge the assumption of a finished piece. Her canvases, adorned with sequins reminiscent of the metallic threads in historic tapestries, offer a unique experience. While the sequins discs work to emulate the patches of color in an impressionist or pointillist painting, they also evoke the concept of pixels forming a larger digital picture. The sequins' dual-colored sides lead to countless variations, where random strokes yield fleeting motifs, each capable of evoking a different experience. The images shift and morph, belonging to a different temporal and spatial reality—an elusive, expansive motion that's nearly impossible to grasp. This groundbreaking interlude between dimensions takes on a mystical quality.

Through her artwork, Olga Titus invites us to immerse ourselves in the landscape of her personal iconography, drawing from her Malaysian and Swiss heritage, navigating the overloaded aesthetics of popular culture, gaming, and social media. Her body of work delves into questions of identity, society, and spirituality.

Olga Titus (b. 1977) is a Swiss and Malaysian artist best known for her embroidered sequins artworks which play with notions of transition and exchange between cultures, people, experiences, and the analog and digital realms. Her artworks, installations and video works create a captivating cosmos of Bollywood-aesthetics, folklore, pop-culture and computer game worlds. Artworks by Olga Titus’ can be found in prestigious collections in both the United States and abroad, and she is the winner of several notable museum prizes including art prizes from the Bündner Kunstmuseum, Kunstmuseum Winterthur, and the Caton of Thurgau. In 2020, Titus was invited by Dior to join artists like Judy Chicago in reimagining the iconic Lady Dior handbag. Olga Titus lives and works in Winterthur, Switzerland.
