Summer Showcase: Jaqueline Cedar (featuring Negative Design Co.)
“I think of these recent paintings as visual poems. They each pull from fleeting moments in dreams or daily observations that I’m working to slow down in translating the imagery from memory.”
Kelly-McKenna Gallery is pleased to present Summer Showcase: Jaqueline Cedar, the second installment in its Summer Showcase series. This focused exhibition pairs Cedar’s psychologically resonant paintings with handcrafted design pieces by Negative Design Co., creating a dialogue between the interior mind and the sculpted object.
Jaqueline Cedar’s work explores emotional and psychological space through paintings that feel both intimate and suspended in time. Repetitive, softened forms seem to blur and flicker across the canvas, inviting the viewer into a dreamlike atmosphere where memory and motion converge. Her palette and composition draw the eye into these private worlds—spaces that are deeply personal, yet uncannily familiar.
Interspersed among the paintings are pieces by Jerome Fleischman of Negative Design Co., a Colorado-based designer whose sculptural furniture and objects embrace negative space—both as a visual tool and philosophical principle. His handmade works, often using reclaimed materials, serve as quiet complements to Cedar’s scenes, inviting contemplation of what is absent as much as what is present. Jerome’s practice began in childhood, rooted in woodworking and later expanded through studies in glassblowing, metal, and 3D art. His studio’s ethos is both aesthetic and environmental: creating carbon-conscious design objects that honor material integrity and restraint.
Together, Cedar and Negative Design Co. offer a space where viewers are invited to reflect—not just on what they see, but on what they sense. The pairing underscores the gallery’s continued commitment to showcasing artists whose work engages both interiority and material presence.
As part of the exhibition, Kelly-McKenna Gallery will host a special event with the artist and designer in conversation.
